summer reading

i’m often asked what i’m currently reading or what i’ve recently read… so here are some of the highlights from the summer. all of these are trade paperbacks or graphic novels, by the way… i’m in the middle of a few “regular” novels and will comment on them this fall. 🙂 anyhow, on to the list. all of these are definitely worth reading, even if you’re not a graphic storytelling fan.

superman: birthright — GREAT story, AWESOME artwork… really cool modern retelling of our man’s origin. great read. 4 out of 5 stars.

daredevil: father — joe quesada’s one of my favorite creators, and he wrote and illustrated this one… and it’s a powerhouse. poignant, heartfelt, and brutal. a beautiful father-son story. loved this one. 4 out of 5 stars.

batman, vol. 1: the court of owls — it’s always hard to bring a new villain into the mix, but they killed it with this one. tons of fun with a real challenge for batman and great art by a long time fave. 4 out of 5.

underwater welder — came highly recommended by a lot of artists i like. i enjoyed it, but it didn’t connect with me like i kill giants. a good, deeply emotional tale of a man trying to find himself. very unique artwork. 3 out of 5.

hellboy: seed of destruction and wake the devil — man, i love hellboy. mignola’s art is fantastic and creepy and the story is freaky and lovecraftian and awesome. 4 out of 5.

again, all of these are worth a read and worth your hard-earned dollar. more reviews in the coming weeks, along with some top 10s.

oh, and a TORRENT of artwork coming your way very soon. stay tuned!
